Kitsap County Legislative Districts

The district includes northern Kitsap County and Bainbridge Island. 

The district includes the southeastern Kitsap Peninsula from Bremerton and Port Orchard in the north to Gig Harbor in the south. 

The district includes the southwestern Kitsap Peninsula from Silverdale in the north to Shelton in the south.

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) – Disability rights are civil rights. From voting to parking, the ADA is a law that protects people with disabilities in many areas of public life.

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is the nation’s special education law. Schools must find and evaluate students thought to have disabilities — at no cost to families. To qualify for IDEA services, a child must have a disability and need special education to make progress in school.

Olmstead Decision The US Supreme Court held that public entities must provide community-based services to persons with disabilities when (1) such services are appropriate; (2) the affected persons do not oppose community-based treatment; and (3) community-based services can be reasonably accommodated, taking into account the resources available to the public entity and the needs of others who are receiving disability services from the entity.

Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act was the first disability civil rights law to be enacted in the United States. It prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in programs that receive federal financial assistance, and set the stage for enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
