Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) – Disability rights are civil rights. From voting to parking, the ADA is a law that protects people with disabilities in many areas of public life.
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is the nation’s special education law. Schools must find and evaluate students thought to have disabilities — at no cost to families. To qualify for IDEA services, a child must have a disability and need special education to make progress in school.
Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act was the first disability civil rights law to be enacted in the United States. It prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in programs that receive federal financial assistance, and set the stage for enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
