Autism & I/DD Training: The Importance of Planning

Don’t Let Fate Be in Control of Your Loved One’s Destiny
Families and care providers of loved ones with Autism and Intellectual Disabilities need to stay engaged in the disability community because it takes a village. We know that life after the entitled school years is often scattered with challenges and setbacks; we as parents and self-advocates need to be persistent, hopeful, and planful. The reality we face is that we cannot rely on the social service system to meet the needs of our loved ones, there isn’t enough money or expertise to do that. What we can do as parents for our children is to dream, innovate, and activate a plan for the lifespan. This training will provide you with an overview of lifespan supports and services, planning tools, who to involve, and how to activate and sustain a plan.
Training participants will learn:
- The importance of knowing the social service system.
- When to plan and how to revise the plan.
- Developing a plan is a helpful outcome that will benefit the guardianship annual reporting.
- When to ask for services, how to ask for services, and be planful of the future for you and your loved one so no one gets surprised, uprooted, or traumatized by unforeseen life circumstances.
