Abstract: The field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is often identified as the preferred treatment for Autism. Since its inception in the 1970s, practitioners of ABA have helped innumerable individuals overcome barriers and increase independence in their daily lives. Each year, the research base supporting ABA methodology continues to grow, and the number of certified practitioners utilizing the science mirrors these trends. Despite the gains observed in practice, the field is not without criticism from self-advocates and others who have either received treatment in the past or are associated with one who has. In this presentation, common criticisms of ABA will be discussed and ethical considerations surrounding the development of treatment plans and preferred outcomes will be reviewed.
