DESCRIPTION:Individuals with autism can experience challenges in executive functioning that dramatically affect their ability to perform tasks independently to completion. As a result\, an autistic person often relies heavily on the support of family\, teachers\, job coaches\, and caregivers to complete daily\, academic\, or work tasks. Join us in this training to learn about executive function\, critical thinking\, learning styles\, and how it impacts independence. This training will also provide information\, strategies\, and tools that provide support\, based on learning styles that encourage independence. \nTraining participants will learn: \n\nOverview of Autism characteristics\,\nUnderstand learning styles\, executive function\, and critical thinking and its impact on independence and self-esteem.\nLearn strategies that encourage independence and autonomy; building on strengths\, interests\, and motivations.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP is requested but not required in order to share information beforehand. DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is often identified as the preferred treatment for Autism. Since its inception in the 1970s\, practitioners of ABA have helped innumerable individuals overcome barriers and increase independence in their daily lives. Each year\, the research base supporting ABA methodology continues to grow\, and the number of certified practitioners utilizing the science mirrors these trends. Despite the gains observed in practice\, the field is not without criticism from self-advocates and others who have either received treatment in the past or are associated with one who has. In this presentation\, common criticisms of ABA will be discussed and ethical considerations surrounding the development of treatment plans and preferred outcomes will be reviewed.
