SUMMARY:RESCHEDULED Autism Training: Advocacy for Appropriate Service Supports
DESCRIPTION:This training will be rescheduled.  \nIf you are interested in dropping in for a casual discussion\, please join us at this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/8599141421?omn=84159516064 \nWe will be there until 7:30 PM \nTo be an autism advocate means standing up for the rights of people with autism and amplifying the voices of the community when they are faced with obstacles. This can be done in many ways\, such as educating others\, volunteering\, or donating to autism advocacy organizations\, and defending their right at local\, state\, and federal levels of services. Self-advocacy should be taught explicitly\, and practiced at school\, out in the community\, and at home. In this training\, you will learn the importance of self-advocate voices\, the value of your loved one’s voice\, and their ability to communicate their choice and interests. Come explore with us what advocacy is on all levels of advocacy. \nTraining participants will learn: \n\nHow communication supports and choice opportunities foster self-advocacy\, specifically for non-verbal individuals.\nSelf-advocacy is especially important for students with autism and is necessary to achieve a higher level of independence\, confidence\, and a sense of identity.\nLearn that advocacy from parents and guardians has been the trailblazing efforts that have made and changed policies on a local\, state\, and federal level.\n\n  \nThere are three teacher clock hours available. This free class is provided by Kitsap County Developmental Disabilities and Monica Meyer Consulting. \nDownload Flyer \n \n

SUMMARY:Autism & I/DD Training: The Importance of Planning
DESCRIPTION:Don’t Let Fate Be in Control of Your Loved One’s Destiny\nFamilies and care providers of loved ones with Autism and Intellectual Disabilities need to stay engaged in the disability community because it takes a village. We know that life after the entitled school years is often scattered with challenges and setbacks; we as parents and self-advocates need to be persistent\, hopeful\, and planful. The reality we face is that we cannot rely on the social service system to meet the needs of our loved ones\, there isn’t enough money or expertise to do that. What we can do as parents for our children is to dream\, innovate\, and activate a plan for the lifespan. This training will provide you with an overview of lifespan supports and services\, planning tools\, who to involve\, and how to activate and sustain a plan. \nTraining participants will learn: \n\nThe importance of knowing the social service system.\nWhen to plan and how to revise the plan.\nDeveloping a plan is a helpful outcome that will benefit the guardianship annual reporting.\nWhen to ask for services\, how to ask for services\, and be planful of the future for you and your loved one so no one gets surprised\, uprooted\, or traumatized by unforeseen life circumstances.\n\nRegister to get the Zoom link. There are three teacher clock hours available. \nThis class is provided free by Kitsap County Developmental Disabilities and Monica Meyer Consulting.

SUMMARY:Autism Therapies and Best Practices Supports
DESCRIPTION:Many interventions exist for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Yet\, scientific research has found only some of these interventions effective. The interventions that researchers have shown to be effective are called evidence-based practices (EBPs). One reason for using EBPs is that\, by law\, teaching practices must be based on evidence of effectiveness. \nWe will learn \n\nabout ASD-EBPs\nat what age and stage they are used and implemented\nat what cognitive levels they can be effective\nhow they provide socially competent instruction\nsensory processing\nand more.\n\nWe will also touch upon the history and controversy of ABA. To learn more about ABA\, read Understanding ABA for Parents & Caregivers. \nZoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/8599141421

DESCRIPTION:Clock hours and attendance certificates are available.\nA light lunch is served. Please let us know if you have dietary considerations. \nIF YOU WANT TO CREATE “LACK OF MOTIVATION” FOR SOMEONE WITH AUTISM…Make trust\, love\, and acceptance contingent on their “Good Behavior.” In this training\, we will talk about how relationships begin with trust\, respect\, understanding\, communication\, choice\, and patience. These are important health and safety conditions we need to stand firm on. Trusting relationships help our sons and daughters feel safe to communicate their wants and needs whether they are verbal or not. Building a foundation of respect needs to be on the terms of the individual we support. \nIf you are not able to come in person\, join us on Zoom at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/8599141421 \nRSVP is requested but not necessary to attend.
